RHDRA Roles and opportunities

As a voluntary organisation, and a registered charity, the RHDRA relies on the unpaid efforts of its members to make things happen.

The Trustees would particularly like to hear from members who may be able to help in the following areas. If you are interested and would like to get more involved in the running of the Association, please email us on [email protected] giving a brief rundown of which areas interest you, the experience you feel you might be able to bring to them, a little bit about you personally, and your contact details.

The RH&DR Association is run entirely by volunteers and they have been really busy during lockdown. To build on a successful year, the Trustees are now offering an opportunity for members to get involved with the workings of the Association and to join a great team.

We are looking for some help in key areas of the Association. Most aspects of the roles can be performed remotely provided you have a PC, laptop or tablet, Wi-Fi and a ‘phone and printer. You will have contact with several areas of the Association, our Members and Railway staff, so must be able to get on with a wide range of people.

Depending on how involved you would like to be, your available time, and your particular interests, there may be the opportunity to combine some roles.

Assistant to the Membership Secretary

We’re looking for someone to assist our Membership Secretary. If you’re interested, you will need to be familiar with operation of Word, Excel, videoconferencing, and able to adapt to using other software packages. Reliability is important as membership administration of our 2000 members requires frequent operational input. Covering for the Membership Secretary as necessary is important but there are also a range of regular and ad-hoc tasks to be undertaken.

If you have excellent communication skills, combined with accuracy and the highest respect for the privacy and security of our members’ information, then you could be just the person we need.

Marshlander Administrator

We’re looking for someone to run our service selling back copies of the Marshlander magazine and binders on request to our members and the wider public. There is a requirement to have sufficient room to hold our stock of magazines in a warm, dry environment.

Looking to the future, we will be looking at making the archive more accessible to our members and the wider community. The role requires a person who can provide good customer service, create and maintain a stock control and ordering and despatch process and think creatively about enhancements to the service.

Assistant to the Marshlander Editor

The current editor has fulfilled the role for some time now, which has traditionally been a shared one with at least one other person. Are you someone with a good knowledge and understanding of the railway? Are you a regular visitor and/or volunteer? You could be our new Assistant Editor and help describe and explain our much loved railway to the membership. Advanced literary skills are not required – just an understanding of what the railway is about, and an eye/ear to what is happening, and what would interest readers.

Assistant to the Treasurer

The Association is looking for somebody to assist the Treasurer in maintaining our financial systems. The accounting system used by the Association is Xero, an online accounting system which is easy to use and has the benefit of being able to be accessed remotely. The Association does not employ anybody and we are not registered for VAT so we don’t have those complications. Familiarity with Excel and Word are also required.

Promotions and Events Organiser

The Association needs someone who is experienced in event organisation from conception to implementation. There are many event and communications tasks for which we currently don’t have enough resource and we are looking to someone with the experience and ability to take the lead, and maybe an assistant too, to help with general promotion of the Association and the Railway. We have a number of milestones coming up, not least the big Centenary celebrations in 2027. This role will involve working with all parts of the Association and the Railway.

If you are interested in any of the above roles, please let us have some details of your past and present experience, why you would like to get involved and your membership number. If you’re interested, please email us at [email protected] and we will arrange for a discussion to explore further.
