Volunteering on the Railway

Volunteering is the backbone of the Association. In our fifty year history our volunteers have swept platforms, answered telephones, driven trains, staffed stations and signal boxes, cleaned coaches, laid track, cut back vegetation, written magazine articles, dressed as Santa’s elves, climbed ladders, salvaged artefacts, wielded shovels, put up fences, cleared up rubbish, dug holes, raised poles, made coffee, drunk tea, served pasties, published books, cut sandwiches, driven vans, moved tanks, killed weeds, sown grass, tied knots, burned sleepers, piled stores, scattered ballast, packed track, connected wires, lifted gates, laid concrete, collected photographs, broken up concrete, moved concrete, built walls, served drinks, attended shows, worn overalls, sashes, boots, costumes, gloves, hats…
